In a world completely inundated with zombie movies and fear of worldwide epidemic comes one of the most original movies I have seen in a long, long time. I can sum this up really quickly. Its 28 Days later meets Superbad.
I loved this movie. frickin loved it. It was one of those movies where as soon as you hear of it you're like "yea I have to go see that". Well this movie did not disappoint. Zombie destruction everywhere, a vast wasteland of roaming hoards of killer rotting flesh. Throw Woody Harrelson in there with a fucking pick axe and a shot gun and you know that the stage is set for 1:30 of pure joy.
Using our boy hero Columbus's "rules to live by" we quickly learn the do's and don'ts that have kept him alive. Things like the "double tap" because that one extra shot could mean the difference between another day and being zombie lunch. Meeting up with Harrelsons character in true buddy movie fashion they set out on a mostly pointless trip only to be duped by two young girls, who they then set out to find and possibly get revenge with. Well any moron could predict the obvious next and Columbus character which is played by Jessie Eisenberg falls for the older girl played by Emma Stone .
That's basically the plot but the good stuff in the movie is defiantly the action/comedy mix. Harrelson makes the move in my book. His character Tallahassee is just plain and simple pissed off at the Zombies for killing the ones he loved and he is going to kill every last one of them rotting bastards he can. This he does with perfection and it suits the crazy style of acting that Harrelson has shown to be so adept at in the past in movies like Natural Born Killers and the like. There are a few slow motion scenes including the opening credit which are just amazing. This movie is shot really well and you get a good sence of the total destruction of everything because of the zombie infection. Its amazing looking and it makes an unusual backdrop for a lot of the humor throughout the film.
Now humours or not his picture does not lack at all in the action realm. Getting into all sorts of situations throughout the film provides ample opportunity to chop off a few zombie heads with whatever might happen to be around, be it a bat or hedge trimmers. I have to say that by the end this is one of the few movies I have watched and really hoped they would make a sequel. There is a lot of the new family guy style of cut scene humor showing the "zombie kill of the week" and it really adds a nice new take on a zombie movie. With the sheer multitude of zombie movies out there they had to go out there and do something new and original and I think this movie is all of that and more. It really seems like one of these rare gems of a movie that could easily have been released in the summer movie rush and lost in the mix, but instead released in September finds its true audience and gets the attention it deserves. I give this one a 5 star rating. This one is going down on my list of all time faves!
Oh Yea If your not already sold Bill Murray's in it. I mean come on Bill Murray Zombie! ★★★★★
